Frog Life Cycle Video
Facts About Frogs ● Amphibians: Two lives (lives on land & in water) ● Cold Blooded ● Webbed Feet ● Breathe with lungs & gills ● Moist smooth skin ● Four legs (sometimes none) ● Lay many eggs ● Begin their life in water with gills ● Adult frogs live on land ● Frogs absorb air and water through their skin ● Frogs don’t close their eyes when they sleep ● Found all over the world except in Antartica
Stage 1: Egg ● Lay eggs in masses in ponds or streams ● Floating clump of eggs is called a Frog Spawn ● Some frogs leave, others watch over the eggs ● Eggs are surrounded by gel-like substance ● Only a few eggs begin to develop because water creatures eat most of the eggs
Stage 1: Eggs
Stage 2: Tadpole ● Tadpole eats the jelly and works its way out of the egg ● After 21 days, they hatch ● When they hatch they have a long tail and gills for breathing in water ● Tadpoles eat plants & algae for weeks to grow larger
Stage 2: Tadpoles (continued) ● Tadpoles are very vulnerable and rely on their camouflage to protect themselves ● Tadpoles grow tiny teeth and begin eating insects in the water
Stage 2: Tadpoles
Stage 3: Froglet ● Metamorphosis: Transformation or change in shape ● Grows hind legs and the tail starts disappearing ● Begins to grow front legs ● The froglet’s gills begin to disappear and grows lungs for breathing
Stage 3: Froglet
Stage 4: Adult Frog ● 11 weeks after the eggs were laid, a frog emerges from the water ● Frogs will mostly live on land with occasional swims ● Tiny frogs will eat insects and worms ● Eventually will find a mate and the whole process will begin again
