Hydrilla Sept 2014
Hydrilla Action Plan Add more grass carp FOLH put in 1 carp per acre in 2013 and will add 1 carp per acre in 2014. FWC requires letters of authorization to stock the lake with more than 2 carp per acre. We need this authorization in case more carp are needed. Letters are required from HOA’s. Due date: Nov 15, 2014 Whole lake chemical treatment The window of opportunity is Feb-Apr 2015 (low lake level which requires less chemical). We need $150, 000 from the lake community. Due date: Jan 31, 2015
Hydrilla Action Plan This is an extremely aggressive plan. The whole lake treatment is contingent on the authorization to stock additional carp AND the influx of $150, 000. If we miss this window, the next window of opportunity is Feb-Apr 2016. In the meantime the hydrilla will continue to expand next summer (2015) the entire lake will be covered with hydrilla from the shore out to a depth of 8 feet. Let’s get moving!!!
Carp Authorization Letter I/we authorize Friends of Lake Howell (FOLH) to stock grass carp for the purpose of controlling hydrilla and to determine the number of carp necessary to accomplish that purpose. It is the goal of FOLH to maintain a healthy aquatic ecosystem in the lake. Further it is the goal of FOLH to control the hydrilla with a balance of chemicals and carp such that the aquatic ecosystem will be maintained. My/our financial input to FOLH will directly affect the ability of FOLH to maintain the proper balance of chemicals and carp (chemicals cost 1000 times as much as carp). Stocking of carp is not an exact science and there can be substantial variation in the number of carp required from one site to another. FOLH will take the most conservative approach that funding will permit.
Grass Carp Stocking Rates “stocking rates as low as 8 fish per vegetated acre produced complete eradication whereas rates as high as 74 fish per vegetated acre produced no control. ” Grass Carp Report p. 17 FDEP Jan 2008 Conclusion: EVERY LAKE IS UNIQUE!
