Tuesday, November 18, 2014 Tutorial Data/Immediate Feedback- 1 st Block Positives Negatives Some students

Tuesday, November 18, 2014 Tutorial Data/Immediate Feedback- 1 st Block Positives Negatives Some students were using their H. O. T question foldables Students had to remind each other to do 30 second speeches Some students were asking H. O. T questions on their own Students were socializing, even after I said to stop, even though I was close by. -_- Far less technology violations CHIPS? Really? Yall didn’t even pass them on the low. And I heard the N-Word twice. And lots of gossipping. Only 2 groups didn’t need to be spoken to Several “pointless” tutorials took place, in which the presenter already knew the answer and/or the group didn’t teach the student presenter anything Group members took too long to copy 3 -column notes Claim- First Block deserves an 83% for today’s tutorials, which is an “Average” grade of a C. Evidence- I feel first block zdeserves an average grade because they needed to be reminded of basic things too often, like to complete 30 - second speeches, to not take too long to copy three column notes, and to not talk or break the normal, everyday rules. Reasoning- Because they still aren’t changing the things I’ve said to change several times, they don’t deserve an “above average” or “excellent” grade.

2 nd Block Tutorial Data Positives Negatives Chyna was IMMEDIATELY reflective with her POC

2 nd Block Tutorial Data Positives Negatives Chyna was IMMEDIATELY reflective with her POC and changed it at the beginning of class because she had learned it. She didn’t say “What should I do Ms. K? ” She just did it. Phones blatantly out. Chyna helped other students out with clarifing their POCs. A small amount of POCs weren’t quality POCs and it was obvious during the tutorial sessions. POCs seemed authentic Students thought they could horseplay when they were done. On-task– I couldn’t hear any off-task conversations I didn’t see many students using the construction paper foldables. I heard good HOT questions, but only a few, from a small amount of students. Claim: Second block deserves an 88%, which is an “above average” B. Evidence: Students started off strong, but as groups and individuals were finishing up kids stopped taking the process as seriously. Also, I wanted to see more people utilzing higher order thinking questions. Finally, some POCs weren’t as solid as they needed to be. Reasoning: Because there are still some areas we need to improve, 2 nd block doesn’t deserve a perfect score of an A.

3 rd Block Tutorial Immediate Data Positives Negatives Most people didn’t need to be

3 rd Block Tutorial Immediate Data Positives Negatives Most people didn’t need to be spoken to. Tardies back from lunch– same people who I always have to talk to. Very few technology violations Off-task behavior (heads down, messing with hair, facing each other having conversations) Play play fighting Cussing Third Block– You are on your own. Create your own C-E-R chain. From here on out- four groups instead of five.

Model Summary Paragraph Foreword Daughter of Malcolm X, Attallah Shabazz, in the non fiction “Autobiography of Malcolm X, ” discusses the positive legacy of her father from her perspective. She supports her claim by sharing anecdotes, flashbacks, and famous quotes. She next proceeds to show that he accomplished a lot in his short lifetime. Finally, she argues that he was a man for all to look up to, not a certain group. Shabazz’s purpose is to shed a positive light on her father in order to keep his legacy alive. She adopts a commemorative tone for future readers.

Main Idea Bullet Points: Foreword “Just when our country’s… grown insensitive to justice”, strong connotation “Immeasurable” Compares her father’s life story to the Diary of Anne Frank No matter how much your life sucks, or you have done something wrong, you still have time to change those wrongdoings. Claims her father could never have imagined that his words, philosophy, and wisdom would still offer guidance to those all around the world. Her mother felt as if issuing the stamp was “his due” Attallah claims to miss her father and the “nostalgic memory” of a life with both parents, , , uninterrupted. Parallel structure: “he never left her, he never left us. ” Explains that Malcolm was greatly humorous, and boy-like, unlike what we have seen in the media. “Malcolm was our manhood. Our living black manhood. ”- Ossie Davis Describes the stamp as America’s stamp of approval. Describes Malcolm X as “complicated” “intricate” “complex” “focused”, and an advocate of social reconstruction Explains the meaning behind “by any means necessary” as “exploring the options”, and not, in fact, violent. Claims her grandparents were heavy in equipping their kids with a clear awareness of their ancestral power, and were inspired by Garvey When Malcolm was younger his teacher steered him from being a lawyer

Finally, she argues that Malcolm’s legacy should be honored. Shabazz’s purpose is to rewrite the broken history of her father’s life in order to inspire future generations. She establishes a tone of

Ethos can be compared with the concept of “street cred, ” the idea

Ethos can be compared with the concept of “street cred, ” the idea that one’s credibility, trustworthiness, personal experience, position, profession, or other factor automatically lends the speaker and her argument credence and believability, provided that the speaker is addressing a topic about which she is reasonably supposed to be knowledgeable. (For example, the Surgeon General may have a great deal of ethos if speaking about health issues, but possibly not so much about East Coast/West Coast rap rivalry. ) Pathos can be defined as the appeal to emotion: the classic cry, “But what about the children!” is a form of pathos in that it is mostly designed to use a tool of sentiment to persuade the audience to believe a proposal or take some form of action. An advertising campaign for a charity to prevent starvation might feature a picture of a victim of suffering in order to increase sympathy (an emotion) and provoke the desire to end the calamity. Similarly, a campaign for a politician running for office might feature American flags or other symbols designed to increase feelings of patriotism. Logos can be defined as the appeal to logic – it is a fact-based argument that very often uses classically logical approaches such as the syllogism to make a point, or uses reliable sources of data as the primary “convincers” in an argument.

Monday, 4/20/15 - AVID Warm Up: Read the slide and add your own definition

Monday, 4/20/15 - AVID Warm Up: Read the slide and add your own definition of theme to your Cornell Note sheet on pages 1 and 2 of your Poetry Notebook. Also update your table of contents. Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. 1. It is important not to confuse a theme of a literary work with its subject. Subject is a topic which acts as a foundation for a literary work while a theme is an opinion expressed on the subject. For example, a writer may choose a subject of war for his story and theme of a story may be writer’s personal opinion that war is a curse for humanity. Usually, it is up to the readers to explore a theme of a literary work by analyzing characters, plot and other literary devices. A writer presents themes in a literary work through several ways. A writer may express a theme through the feelings of his main character about the subject he has chosen to write about. Similarly, themes are presented through thoughts and conversations of different characters. Moreover, the experiences of the main character in the course of a literary work give us an idea about its theme. Finally, the actions and events taking place in a narrative are consequential in determining its theme.

Let’s Look for the Theme in a Poem Together… Shifts in Character Shifts in Conflict Direct Statements/Quotes/Dialogue Symbols/Motifs/Figurative Language “Conceit” DH Lawrence (1885 -1930) It is conceit that kills us and makes us cowards instead of gods. Under the great Command: Know thy self, and that thou art mortal! We have become fatally self-conscious, fatally self-important, fatally entangled in the cocoon coils of our conceit. Now we have to admit we can't know ourselves, we can only know about ourselves. And I am not interested to know about myself any more, I only entangle myself in the knowing. Now let me be myself, now let me be myself, and flicker forth, now let me be myself, in the being, one of the gods.

Now let’s take some sassy notes on different forms of poetry! Sonnet- a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, typically having ten syllables per line and is written in iambic pentameter. It has a specific rhyme scheme and a “volta” or a specific turn. The rhyme scheme in a Shakespearean sonnet usually abab-cdcd-efef-gg and in an Italian sonnet it is abba-cde-cde. Italian sonnets are divived into two stanzas: the first an octet and the last a sestet. Narrative poetry is a form of poetry that tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metred verse. Narrative poems do not have to follow rhythmic patterns. A limerick is a form of poetry with a strict rhyme scheme (AABBA), which is sometimes obscene with humorous intent. The first, second and fifth lines are usually longer than the third and fourth. Lyric Poetry is a form of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person. [1] Lyric poems are meant to have musical accompaniment so usually they rhyme and are written in metre.

Made a loud noise Everyone stared us We even didn’t care How they looked at us. So I grabbed my pocket There was none We saw ourselves silent Decided to run. We stood up on a table Smiling around We ran out from cafe Whining at town. We laughed stupidly Though we were chased Like those crazy kids Who run in a maze.

What kind of poem is this? 138 When my love swears that she is made of truth, I do believe her though I know she lies, That she might think me some untutored youth, Unlearned in the world's false subtleties. Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young, Although she knows my days are past the best, Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue: On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed: But wherefore says she not she is unjust? And wherefore say not I that I am old? O! love's best habit is in seeming trust, And age in love, loves not to have years told: Therefore I lie with her, and she with me, And in our faults by lies we flattered be.

Tuesday 4/28/15 AVID 1. Warm Up: Please add important information from the following paragraphs to your definition of ballad. Poetic Form: Ballad Centuries-old in practice, the ballad in many cases is accompanied by musical instruments. Their subject matter deal with religious themes, love, tragedy, domestic crimes, and sometimes even political propaganda. A typical ballad is a plot-driven song, with one or more characters hurriedly unfurling events leading to a dramatic conclusion. At best, a ballad does not tell the reader what’s happening, but rather shows the reader what’s happening, describing each crucial moment in the trail of events. To convey that sense of emotional urgency, the ballad is often constructed in quatrain stanzas, each line containing as few as three or four stresses and rhyming either the second and fourth lines, or all alternating lines.
