Early Life • Born in 1907 in the suburbs of Mexico City, Mexico. • Originally studied to go into the medical profession.

Becoming an Artist • At age 18, Kahlo was injured in a bus accident. She spent over a year in bed, recovering. • During her recovery, Kahlo began painting with oils.

Self-Portraits • Kahlo used a mirror over her bed to paint many self -portraits, using bright colors reminiscent of Mexican folk art. • Her portraits were honest depictions of herself. She did not hide her flaws and expressed her emotions openly in her paintings.

Diego Rivera • In 1929, Kahlo married Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. • They had a difficult relationship, enduring infidelity, divorce, remarriage, and Kahlo’s health problems.

Diego Rivera • Despite their problems, Kahlo and Rivera cared deeply for each other. • Kahlo often included her husband in her paintings.

Kahlo’s Death • Kahlo never truly recovered from the bus accident and spent much of her life in pain. • In 1954 at the age of 47 Kahlo died, due to complications from the accident.
