Frida Kahlo 1907 -1954 • Born in Mexico City. • Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self portraits and works inspired by nature, Mexico and her life and loves. • She is celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female form and experience. • Suffered polio as a child and nearly died in a horrific bus accident as a teenager. Whilst recovering from multiple injuries she taught herself to paint.

Frida …… • Was about to become a doctor before the bus accident • Joined the Mexican communist party in 1927 • Married the artist Diego Rivera in 1927…. He was 20 years older than her. • ‘The elephant and the dove’ • Divorced from Rivera …. and then remarried him. They both had several affairs.

Frida is now considered ‘one of the most instantly recognizable artists’ • ‘Fridamania’ coined to describe the phenomenon • Face has been used with same regularity as images of Che. Guevara and Bob Marley • Her life and art have inspired a variety of merchandise and her distinctive look has been appropriated by the fashion world. • Subject of a Hollywood film Frida starring Salma Hayek and earned six academy award nominations • Also featured in Disney. Pixar film Coco.

Frida kept a diary…. . • When Frida was about 36 years old, she began keeping a diary that would serve as another outlet for her emotional and artistic meditations. By this point in her life, she had already divorced and remarried Diego Rivera, her father had passed away some years earlier, and she had undergone a number of surgeries and miscarriages. • Regardless of the many drawings that appear in the diary, it would seem that Kahlo did not necessarily approach the book as a sketchbook. • Diary is filled with pictures and texts, lists and songs, letters and fragments. • And document’s her solace in nature.
