What did Freud say about development? • Freud said that our development was based on conflicts of what society expects of us and what our desires are.
What is a Fixation? “According to Freud, failure to resolve the conflicts in a particular stage can result in a fixation, conflicts or concerns that last beyond the developmental period. ” (Feldman, 441)
The Anal Stage: 12 -18 Months to 3 Years In this stage, children are coming to terms with society’s controls related to toilet training.
Children can become fixated at this stage if they are struggling with toilet training. Results of fixation in this stage: rigidity, orderliness, punctuality OR extreme disorderliness or sloppiness.
• Watch the following episode of “The Odd Couple”. • Determine which character was toilet trained too early, and which was toilet trained too late according to Freud.
The Phallic Stage: 3 to 5 -6 Years In this stage, children are coming to terms with identification of the same sex parent.
The Phallic Stage continued… • In this stage, boys and girls imitate their same sex parent.
The Latency Stage: 5 -6 Years to Adolescence According to Freud, not much happens in this stage.
The Genital Stage: Adolescence to Adulthood
