How can you help your student have a great freshman year?

Communicate the Importance of Freshman Year Freshman year is essential in deciding whether a student drops out or stays in school. --The Atlantic Having a successful freshman year is critical Attendance, Behavior, Course Performance

Communicate the importance of great attendance. The biggest risk factor failing ninth grade is the number of absences during the first 30 days. Missing more than 2 days in September is cause for concern. 10 absences in 1 year or 4 absences in 1 month is considered chronic absenteeism

Help your student have a Growth Mindset! Growth Mindset Fixed Mindset Some people are born smart and others just aren’t. I give up when things get difficult. I avoid challenges. Trying hard means you must lack intelligence or talent. I can learn anything I want to. When I encounter a challenge, I try harder I like challenges. If I try hard, I can be successful. I have not mastered that skill…YET!

1 Help students become more aware of their fixed mindset thoughts and actions. Avoid comments that like, “You just don’t have artistic talent” or “Some people are just not good at math. ” 2 Use “yet” language. Praise the process: effort, seeking new strategies, resiliency. 3 Help students with goalsetting and identifying new strategies. Don’t praise “natural talent. ” The Good News: You can help your student adopt a growth mindset!

Fresh Start Program Freshman will be assigned a mentor Students are expected to see a teacher for extra help during Eagle Block at least 2 x a week. Fill out the Eagle Tracker form for their mentor! Have their teacher sign during Eagle Block. Students will check in with their mentor weekly to make sure all is going well. If grades are good at progress report time, students will graduate from “Fresh Start” and not need to turn in the Eagle tracker form any longer! (given they continue earning passing grades)
