Frequently Asked Questions – Extended certificate in Dance 1. Is it a 1 - or 2 -year course? • This is a 2 -year course only, if you drop it at the end of year 1 then there is no qualification. 2. What type of dance do we learn? • In year 1 you will learn Jazz and contemporary techniques. You will be assessed in these styles by the end of year 1. To improve overall technique, I will teach some ballet technique. 3. How many in a class? • Over the past 5 years we have ranged from 14 to 16 in each class. There are 2 groups for year 1 dance and 2 groups for year 2 dance.
Frequently Asked Questions – Extended certificate in Dance 4. Do I need to have done GCSE dance before joining? No. We do expect you to have received at least 2 years of dance training prior top college in any style. 5. Is there an audition? This year, auditions were carried out before the start of the academic year as a means of understanding potential students’ current skills. Within the audition process, the students took part in : • A jazz technique class • A performance of a solo lasting 1 min of their choice of style to demonstrate interpretive skills • A written assessment on a professional work
Frequently Asked Questions – Extended certificate in Dance 6. What can I do after when I complete the 2 -year course? After completing the course, you will have gained the relevant skills to apply to higher education in dance such as universities and dance colleges. Within the course in year 1, you will be taken through careers lessons where we will investigate higher education in dance training. We often have students who do not want to pursue a career in dance but can still use the UCAS points gained from this course on entry to other subjects.

History of jazz dance (written project) 1. 2. Rehearsal of jazz dance technique (part written part tutor observation and video recordings) 1. 3. Performance of a jazz dance 1. 4. Evaluation of Jazz development in technique and performance (written project) 2. Contemporary Dance 2. 1. History of contemporary dance (written project) 2. 2. Rehearsal of contemporary dance technique (part written part tutor observation and video recordings) 2. 3. Performance of a contemporary dance 2. 4. Evaluation of contemporary development in technique and performance (written project) 3. Developing skills and techniques for performance 3. 1. Investigation into the life of a professional dancer (written project) 3. 2. Rehearsal of jazz and contemporary dance technique (part written part tutor observation and video recordings) 3. 3. Performance of a piece of repertoire dance 4. Healthy Dancer 4. 1. Understand the structure and function of the human body (written project) 4. 2. Develop and apply training techniques for a dancer’s fitness programme (practical with video evidence) 4. 3. Review on development and application of training techniques (written project)

Group performance workshop - This is an externally assessed unit 1. 1. Understand how to interpret and respond to stimulus for a group performance 1. 2. Develop and realise creative ideas for a group performance in response to stimulus 1. 3. Apply personal management and collaborative skills to a group performance workshop process 1. 4. Apply performance skills to communicate creative intentions during performance workshop 1. 5. Review and reflect on the effectiveness of the working process and the workshop performance 8.
