Freedom Condition of being free of restraints; political independence, exemption from unpleasant conditions, capacity to exercise choice or free will; recognizing consequences
Oppression A feeling of being heavily weighed down or burdened, either mentally or physically; usually intentionally placed; not a logical consequence
Types of Freedom and Oppression • Political • Social • Personal
Political • Government and laws
Social--Pertaining to society –Age –Gender –Race –Religious –Economics (Employment, income, class barriers) –Intellectual (Education)
Personal • Individual choice and free will –Familial (think China and laws for one child, preferably male) –Psychological (think 1984) –Individual, rather than large social groups
