Free Verse by Robert Graves I now delight In spite Of the might And the right Of classic tradition, In writing And reciting Straight ahead, Without let or omission, Just any little rhyme In any little time That runs in my head; Because, I’ve said, My rhymes no longer shall stand arrayed Like Prussian soldiers on parade That march, Stiff as starch, Foot to foot, Boot to boot, Blade to blade, Button to button, Cheeks and chops and chins like mutton. No! My rhymes must go Turn ’ee, twist ’ee, Twinkling, frosty, Will-o’-the-wisp-like, misty

Fog by Carl Sandburg The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on.

When looking at the beach picture, what do you think of? What do you feel? What experiences do you have at this location?

Class Poem! Long walks Endless possibilities Free Warmth of the sun Irritated with the sand Little cousins getting lost Fear of getting dragged under Under the Sea Insecure Calm Mysteries of the Deep

8 th Graders Poem! Why isn’t anyone in the water I feel like jumping in Pouring a thousand kool-aid mixes Milk and coconuts Palm-trees

8 th Graders Poem! At the beach I get so wet The ocean blue gave me a flu Down in the horizon Getting eaten by sharks Buried in sand Getting tanned Eating ice cream

A Broken Family Tree by Lori Mc. Bride I am one of many Small branches of a broken tree Always looking to the ones above For guidance, strength and security. One little branch trying To keep the others from breaking away Who will fall? And who will stay? Now I stand alone Looking at the earth through the rain And I see the broken branches I knew Scattered about me in pain. There are those who have taken an axe To the root of our very foundation And who have passed this destruction Down to every new generation. If I could take that axe I would toss it deep into the sea Never to return again To harm the generations that follow me. I am one of many But alone I will go And plant the new seeds Where a beautiful tree will grow.
