We are learning to find half (½) of a shape, an object or a quantity. When we split a whole (shape or object) into 2 equal parts, then we are halving, or creating 2 halves. The 2 halves are always the same size. By adding or putting together 2 halves, we make a whole. When we have a quantity and share it into 2 equal groups, we are creating 2 halves.

Half (½) of a shape When we cut a shape in half, we are creating 2 equal parts. The 2 halves must be the same. ½ of a diamond Half of a rectangle ½ of a rectangle diamond ½ of a triangle Half of a triangle

Half (½) of an object When we cut an object in half, we are creating 2 equal parts. The 2 halves must be the same. Imagine you want to share it with a friend, and you both need to get the same amount. A whole slice of bread A whole pizza Half a pizza ½a slice

Some shapes or objects can be cut/shared in half in more than one ways. They still create 2 parts that are the same. But… This mushroom is cut in half because the 2 halves are the same. This mushroom is not cut in half because the 2 parts are not the same.

Here are some shapes and objects. Have a good look and try to work out which of these can be cut in half (½) in more than one ways?
