Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
Percents as Decimals • To write a percent as a decimal, divide by 100 and remove the percent symbol. Example 1: 63% 63 ÷ 100 = 0. 63 • The decimal moves two places to the left, and you remove the percent symbol.
Decimals as Percents • To write a decimal as a percent, multiply by 100 and add the percent symbol. Example 2: 0. 45 (100) = 45% • The decimal moves two places to the right, and you add the percent symbol.
Fractions as Percents • Method 1: Use a proportion by setting the fraction equal to and solve for x. Then add a percent symbol to your answer. Example 3: Write as a percent. 3(100) = 8 x 37. 5 = x 37. 5%
Fractions as Percents • Method 2: Write as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Then multiply your answer by 100 and add a percent symbol. Example 3: Write as a percent. 0. 3 7 5 8 3. 000 - 24 60 - 56 40 - 40 0 0. 375(100) = 37. 5%
Percent & Decimal Examples Example 4 Example 5 • Change the following percent to a decimal to a percent. 89% 89 ÷ 100 = 0. 89 Divide by 100, or move the decimal two places to the left. 0. 13(100) = 13 13% Multiply by 100, or move the decimal two places to the right. Then add the percent symbol.
Fractions as Percents Write as a percent. Method 1 Method 2 • Use a Proportion. • Write as a decimal. 0. 66… 2(100) = 3 x 66. 66…= x 66. 6 % 3 2. 00 - 18 2 0. 666…(100) = 66. 6… 66. 6%
