Lesson Aim: To understand calculate with fractions (2 hrs). Level 1 Objective: Entry 3 Objectives: All Learners will be able to: ü Understand the meaning of a fraction. ü Simplify a fraction to its lowest term. ü Work out a fraction of an amount ü Find equivalent fractions. Most Learners will be able to: ü Find fractions of an amount, incorporating the cross cancelling method ü Justify your answer and round to the nearest unit Key activities today: Key tasks/outcomes to day will look like this.

What is a Fraction? • A fraction describes part of a whole amount. • They are used for measuring instead of counting e. g. a quarter (1/4) of an hour is 15 minutes. • Fractions are not whole numbers. • They can be represented (written) as decimals or percentages. Denominator – this is how many parts there are in total. Numerator - this is how many equal parts of the whole we have.

Simplifying Fractions To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by the highest number (HCF) that can divide into both numbers exactly. 2 16 3 6 ÷ 2 ÷ 3 1 8 1 2 When do we stop simplifying? 1) When the numerator or denominator is 1. 2) When the numerator or denominator is a prime number that cannot be further simplified. 3) When there is no HCF for the numerator and denominator.

Simplify the following fractions to their lowest forms:

Calculating the Fraction of an Amount 3/4 of £ 38 • There are many ways of finding a Fraction of an amount. • We need to have a confident method of doing this with and without a calculator.

How do I work out a FRACTION of an amount? Very important!!! Amount ÷ D x N N What is 3/4 of £ 38? Amount ÷ D x N 38÷ 4 x 3 = £ 28. 50 is 3/4 of £ 38 D

Remember When you’ve found the Fraction of a quaintly, what do you need to do with it? Take it away? Add it on! 1/4 discount 1/3 Price increase 1/3 off 1/8 Tax/ VAT 2/7 reduction 3/8 Larger £ 38 - £ 28. 50 = £ 9. 50 £ 38 + £ 28. 50 = £ 66. 50
