Fraction Estimation 6. 1. 3. 5 Estimate solutions to problems with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and use the estimates to assess the reasonableness of results in the context of the problem.
I can… Estimate fractions and mixed numbers using benchmark fractions Self Assessment 5 - I can do it without help & teach others. 4 - I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3 - I can do this with a little help. 2 - I can do this with a lot of help! 1 - I don’t have a clue.
Rules… To round a fraction to the nearest benchmark, use the following rules: ◦ If the numerator is much less than the denominator, we round the fraction to 0. ◦ If the numerator is about ½ of the denominator we round the fraction to ½. ◦ If the numerator is much more than the denominator, we round the fraction to 1.
Examples Round 0 Since ¾ 1 4 2 4 3 4 1 ¾ is greater than ½, we round up to 1 Therefore, ¾ rounded to the nearest whole number is 1
Examples Round 0 Since ¼ to the nearest whole number 1 4 2 4 3 4 1 ¼ is less than ½, we round down to 0 Therefore, ¼ rounded to the nearest whole number is 0
Examples 2 Round 4 to the nearest whole number 0 1 4 Since 2 4 3 4 1 is equal to ½, we round up to 1 2 Therefore, 4 rounded to the nearest whole number is 1
Round the fraction. Think: What would be half of 10? 0 3 10 1 2 would round to 1 0

Round the fraction. Think: What would be half of 10? 0 4 10 1 2 would round to 1 1 2
Round the mixed number to the nearest whole number. 1 4 5 4 1 4 5 1 42 would round to 5 4
Round the fraction to the nearest whole number. 3 5 4 5 3 5 4 1 52 rounded to the nearest whole number is 6 6
Estimate the difference. 1 6 4 5 1 6 rounded to the earest whole number 6 2 4
Estimate the sum. 1 7 3 +2 5 10 rounded to the earest whole number 3 + 3 6
