SIMPLE SENTENCE • CONTAINS A SINGLE INDEPENDENT OR MAIN CLAUSE. • SUBJECT, VERB, OR

SIMPLE SENTENCE • CONTAINS A SINGLE INDEPENDENT OR MAIN CLAUSE. • SUBJECT, VERB, OR BOTH MAY BE COMPOUND. • MAY HAVE MODIFYING PHRASES AND COMPLEMENTS. • CANNOT HAVE A SUBORDINATE CLAUSE • EXAMPLES: • THE RAIN FELL. • DAN AND I MADE THE COFFEE. • NEITHER THE TEACHER NOR THE STUDENT HEARD THE ALARM OR SAW SMOKE.

COMPOUND SENTENCE • CONTAINS TWO OR MORE MAIN CLAUSES. • CAN BE JOINED BY

COMPLEX SENTENCE • CONSISTS OF ONE INDEPENDENT OR MAIN CLAUSE AND ONE OR MORE SUBORDINATE CLAUSES. • THE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE IN A COMPLEX SENTENCE IS CALLED THE MAIN CLAUSE TO DISTINGUISH IT FROM THE SUBORDINATE CLAUSE OR CLAUSES. • THE SUBJECT AND VERB IN THE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE ARE CALLED THE SUBJECT OF THE SENTENCE AND THE MAIN VERB.
