European Explorers in the New World Originally had no desire to help establish a new nation. Ø They were following Columbus’s ideas. Ø Poverty or religious persecution or both were issues. Ø Seeking the almighty riches. They saw themselves at the time as Europeans. Ø
Idealism of European colonist who came to the new world. The colonist who arrived would start to separate their ideas from the old European’s ways to the ways of the new world, but very slowly. This will be evident with the American Revolution. They were willing to subjugate others without any moral or ethical remorse. Indians-1 st then African-American slaves
The settlements created self-made individuals. (Good and Bad) Puritans Small Southern Colonies family farms. Democratic communities. Homogenous society. Large land holders-plantations. Forced labor through slavery. Judgmental on those believed to be of a lesser social economics-poor farmers.
Portuguese By 1450 Portuguese mariners overcome the prevailing northern winds and southern flowing currents to sail around the coast of Africa. Set up trading posts for buying gold and slaves. ü Developed a modern-day agriculture system based on large scale commercial farms. ü The use of cheap labor in the form of slavery was incorporated. ü Would become the basis of the new world’s destiny.
World Wide Events take Shape Europeans discover the “Indies” Spain is united with the marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand. Conquest and colonization would follow. Race for wealth! African is established as the main stay for cheap labor. The Renaissance period of optimism fuels the movements.
