FOUNDATIONAL MATHEMATICS Everything you need to know about
FOUNDATIONAL MATHEMATICS Everything you need to know about placing into NSC’s Foundational Math Program
What is this all about? • Unique program designed to help students move into college level math and science courses as quickly as possible without sacrificing content and expectations. • Material is broken down into four units during the 16 week semester
Goals of Remediation • Equip students with the necessary arithmetic and algebra skills to succeed in college level math and science courses. • Provide a solid intellectual foundation of mathematical reason that can be applied to any class • Increase the level of self confidence in students when it comes to working with numbers and algebraic concepts
How it works… • It’s easier for students to concentrate on one small block of information at a time • Each unit is Pass/Fail and you can’t move on to the next unit, without passing the current one • At the end of each unit, students are assigned new classrooms and instructors, depending on if they pass/fail. (time of the class will not change) • Students must pass Unit 4 or a Comprehensive Final Exam (Units 1 – 4) in order to pass Math 95 M
How it works… MATH 95 M Week 1 Pre Test Determines unit placement Weeks 2 – 4 UNIT 1 Operations with Integers Weeks 5 – 7 UNIT 2 Intro to Equations Weeks 8 – 10 UNIT 3 Systems of Equations Weeks 11 – 13 UNIT 4 Functions with Polynomials Weeks 14 – 15 Last Chance Review Week 16 Final Exams Comprehensive
So…let’s see how it works SAMPLE STUDENT A: Enrolled course Math 095 M Units Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Result Pass Transcript: Math 095 M: A • So the student placed into Unit 2 to start the semester, after pre-testing, passed all unit requirements. SAMPLE STUDENT B: Enrolled Course Math 095 M Units Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Result Pass Fail • Notice the Last Chance Exam Transcript: PASS Math 095 M: A
Another example… SAMPLE STUDENT C: Enrolled Course Math 095 M UNITS UNIT 1 Result FAIL LAST CHANCE EXAM UNIT 4 Content - FAIL Transcript: Math 095 M: F
