Foundation Skills Synopsis of this presentation This presentation explains and names Foundation Skills. Formally, Foundation Skills are the five Core Skills from the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) and the eight Employability Skills combined. © Community Centres SA 2016 2

Foundation Skills The Australian Core Skills Framework This document can be accessed at: https: //docs. education. gov. au/system/files/doc/other/acsf_document. pdf In ACE delivery the core skills from Pre-level 1, Level 1 and Level 2 are suitable to include in courses. Each core skill is detailed relating to levels of complexity and names focus areas and performance features. © Community Centres SA 2016 6

Foundation Skills Employability Skills were introduced in May 2005 to the VET sector. Employability Skills are sometimes referred to as soft skills. © Community Centres SA 2016 10

Foundation Skills Employability Skills The facets of the Employability Skills change. When introduced in May 2005, the Employability Skills were embedded into all qualifications within all Training Packages. The facets were specifically written to match the requirements for each qualification specifically. © Community Centres SA 2016 11

Foundation Skills’ Purpose Foundation Skills are used by everybody to perform the everyday tasks which enable life, community and work participation. Foundation Skills are a pivotal component of competency achievement in VET. © Community Centres SA 2016 12

Foundation Skills in ACE In the Foundation Skills Training Package (FSK), Foundation Skills are named that must be addressed in the delivery of any of the units. In this example it can be seen that the core skill of Learning is to be addressed and the exact skill of “Follows short, simple instructions” is the focus. © Community Centres SA 2016 13

Foundation Skills in ACE In the example below two core skills, namely; Reading and Oral Communication along with the Employability Skill of Planning and Organising must be embedded into a course in which this unit is delivered. © Community Centres SA 2016 14

Foundation Skills Embedding Foundation Skills into ACE courses is a requirement of ACE delivery. ACE Tutors are responsible for identifying the Foundation Skills needs of ACE participants. The Tutor must then provide knowledge, practice opportunities with supportive feedback and foster developmental complexity so that mastery and advancement are enabled for the learner. © Community Centres SA 2016 15
