FOSSILS AND FOSSIL RECORDS CHARLIE AITKIN 6 G

WHAT IS A FOSSIL? Fossils are the preserved remains, or traces of remains, of ancient organisms. Fossils are not the remains of the organism itself! They are rocks. A fossil can preserve an entire organism or just part of one

This is a photo of me and my Dad at a fossil museum in Mexico. They were prehistoric sea creatures.

WHAT IS A FOSSIL RECORD? The "fossil record" refers to the placement of fossils throughout the surface layers of the Earth. Older fossils are buried more deeply than younger ones. Scientists use the placement of fossils as a guide for determining when life forms existed, and how they evolved.

OLDEST FOSSIL EVER FOUND Scientists discovered what they thought were 3. 5 billion-year-old fossils in western Australia almost 40 years ago. A new study reveals that these rocks did indeed contain organic life — making them the oldest fossils ever found. The finding confirms that Earth was home to microbial organisms 3. 5 billions years ago. This discovery could assist NASA scientists in their search for similar fossilized lifeforms on Mars. Image of stromatolites from the 3. 5 billion-year-old Dresser Formation in western Australia. The stromatolites are delineated by pyrite, also known as fool's gold. I have a selection of fossils and crystals including a piece of fools gold!!!!!

MY VISIT TO BOGGLE HOLE I went on holiday last year with my Nana and Mum to Boggle Hole. We spent the afternoon looking for fossils and I found 3 small fossils and 1 large fossil.

QUIZ TIME!!! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is a fossil? What country was the oldest fossil found in? How old is the oldest fossil? What 2 holidays I have been on when I have seen or found fossils? How do fossil records work? Find out more about different types of fossils like body and trace fossils by clicking the link below: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=b. Ru. Smx. Jo_i. A
