After Lexington and Concord • After the Battles of Lexington and Concord the Minutemen built fortifications around the city of Boston to keep the British soldiers from leaving. • However, the minutemen had one problem, to face the British army, they needed better weapons, like cannons and mortars.

 • Fort Ticonderoga had many cannons and mortars that the Colonists would need.

Better yet, it was lightly defended by 50 British soldiers that did not expect the Colonists. • On May 10, 1775, less than a month after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Colonial forces charged the fort and took it by surprise, the British commander surrendering in his nightgown. There was no bloodshed.

War hadn’t even been declared, and yet now they controlled an important fort on Lake Champlain in northern New York. • They also had taken 100 cannons, a large mortar and some small cannons called swivel guns (usually used on ships to swivel, move, around. ) • Meanwhile the British had lost an important fort, very embarrassing, also, it was only a matter of time that these weapons would be used against them.
