Fort Sumter ► April 12, 1861: Lasts 33 to 34 hours ► South Carolina had seceded from the Union ► Federal Troops still occupy fort in Charleston Harbor ► Firing on fort is an act of open rebellion
► Lincoln calls the attack on Sumter an act of open rebellion § Union only had 17, 000 troops April 1861 § Lincoln calls for more troops- 90 day call up § Plans to restore the Union by force
The South sees Union response to events at Sumter as an act of war ► The Upper South seceded ► States call up their militias ► “We have vainly tried to secure tranquility and obtain respect for the rights to which we are entitled…with firm resolve we appeal to arms” -Jefferson Davis
