Narrative Poetry This type of poem tells a story and has characters, a setting, theme, and a plot. • Words are arranged in lines and the poem uses rhythm, rhyme, and it shows thoughts and feelings from the writer. • This type of poem may or may not rhyme.

Poetry definitions • Stanza – groups of lines in a poem. They often have four, five, or six lines. (sometimes look like paragraphs) • Rhyme – words that rhyme at the end of certain lines. Ex: I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am. • Rhythm – is the flow of the beat of the poem. Gives poetry a musical feel.

The hunters were suddenly minus one ape! He climbed the tallest building Because from there he'd see How far away the jungle was From the middle of the city. Jimmy jumped into a passing plane But the pilot didn't wait for him to explain Jimmy flew back to the jungle And told his ape friends in their lair "The city's okay for a visit But you couldn't make me live there. "

I am so hungry I could eat a horse. Simile – Compares to things using like or as Ex: Your smile is as bright as the sun. Metaphor – Compares two things by saying something is something Ex: The cloud is a fluffy pillow. Personification – Makes a non-human thing seem human Ex: The tree invited us to come and play. My teacher calls me sweetie cakes. My classmates think it’s funny to hear her call me angel face or pookie bear or honey. My dog ate my homework. It’s gonna be late.
