Formative & Summative Assessment • BOTH serve the same learning goals and are appropriate for the content offered (Links to Bloom levels!) • Formative assessments monitor progress, identify opportunities for growth/intervention, helps students understand their relationship with content, areas for improvement • Summative is the formal assessment of cumulative learning that maps to the overall learning objectives and evaluates the student’s mastery of the skills taught
Authentic Assessment • Mimics a real-world task, typically assesses higher Bloom levels • Measures practical and soft skills at once • Complex tasks that encourage brainstorming, creative & critical thinking, implementation • Iterative & may require multiple stages • Examples: LVN students write patient care plan in response to a case study; HVAC students develop a project plan for a quirky old house
