FORM OF THE LETTER Adress Greeting The opening The body The closing Signing off
Greeting The most common salutation in an informal letter is “Dear. . ” -Note that it is followed by a comma. Dear Andrés , However, some go extremely informal and use “Hey!” or “Hi!” You should use your discretion. Obviously if you are writing to your father, you would not use “Hey!” unless of course you are extremely close.
The opening Is the reason for writing (happiness at receiving letter, apology for not replying faster…) Opening Remarks: • It was great to hear from you / to get your letter! • How are things? ¿Cómo van las cosas? • Sorry I haven’t written for so long. • Thank you so much for … Siento no haberte escrito en tanto tiempo Muchas gracias por… • I was happy / sad to hear that … • Congratulations on … Fue estupendo saber de ti/recibir tu carta Estaba contento/triste de escuchar que… Felicidades por…
The Body Information, news or details Ask questions It is always a good idea to ask questions in the body of the letter that you would like the person to answer in their reply. Questions work as a good base on which to write a letter, and they give the recipient motivation to reply: -How are those wonderful brothers of mine? -Did I tell you that I am librarian too, eh? -Have you made any arrangements yet? -What about your suitcase? Be careful using the correct verb forms Future, past pefect, present perfect continuous…. .
