WHAT IS FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY? �The examination of human skeletal remains for law enforcement agencies to determine the identity of unidentified bones. Questions they look into: -How old were they when they died? -How tall were they? -Were they in good or poor health? -Evaluate trauma seen on bones �A forensic anthro is often called to testify in court regarding the identity of the remains and/or the trauma or wounds present on the remains

CASES KATHY GRUSPIER HAS WORKED ON CHRISTINE MARION JESSOP: (1984) � 9 year old girl from Queensville, Ont. �Raped and murdered & found 50 km from her home �Led to most famous wrongful conviction cases (Guy Paul Morin) �GPM was Christine’s neighbour. �GPM was sentenced to life in prison & was proven innocent in 1995 w/DNA evidence. �GPM spent 10 years in prison. In 1997 he was given 1. 25 million in compensation. 1.

HOLLY JONES: (2003) � 10 yr old Holly dissapeared while walking home from a friends house in High Park, Toronto. �Her remains were discovered the next day on the shores of Toronto Island. �Approx. a month after her murder, 35 yr old software developer Michael Briere was arrested and charged. �He plead guilty & received a life sentence with no chance of parole (25 yrs)

CECILIA ZHANG: (2004) �Cecilia disappeared from her bedroom in the middle of the night. �Her remains were found 5 months after she disappeared. � 4 months later a visa student, who had been a guest in the Zhang home on several occasions, was arrested and charged with her murder.
KATHY’S CASES CONT… 4. ALICIA ROSS: (2005) �Disappeared after being dropped off at her front door by her boyfriend. �Neighbour, Daniel Sylvester, turned himself in to authorities a few days later and was sentenced to life in prison for second degree murder
