Forces + Motion Vocabulary BEVERLY HILLS ELEMENTARY 5 TH GRADE
Forces A PUSH or PULL Measured in NEWTONS
Unbalanced Force When in size two forces acting on an object are not equal
Balanced Force Equal forces acting on one objects in opposite directions Dow not change the objects motion
Gravity Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what makes objects fall Pulls objects downward
Gravitational Pull The pull that keeps us on the ground. Anything that has mass has a gravitational pull The amount of gravitation pull depends on the mass of the object (the more mass the bigger a pull)
Friction A force that is acting in the opposite direction of the motion of the object It will slow the object down Anytime two objects rub against each other they cause frication EX: The box they boy is pushing is rubbing against the floor creating friction
Acceleration Increase in speed
Deceleration Decrease in speed
Speed Measurement of how fast an object moves from one point to another
Constant Speed Going at the same speed, not getting faster and not getting slower
Distance How far an object traveled Can be measured in miles, kilometers (km), meters (m), etc.
Initial Position/ Reference Point The start position of an object (initial means beginning)
Velocity How fast an object is moving in a certain direction
Mass Measurement of how much matter is in an object (measured in kilograms = kg) Mass = how much matter is inside an object
Motion Being moved
Position Where an object is
Momentum The strength or force that something has when it is moving
Exerted To put forth as strength EX: He exerted force to open the jar
Increasing/Decreasing Increasing=Becoming greater Decreasing= Becoming less
Newtons What we measure force in
Inertia Tendency of a body or object to resist a change in motion or rest.
Compass Instrument with a magnetic pointer that will show the direction of North
X-Axis Horizontal axis on a graph (left to right)
Y-Axis Vertical line on a graph (up and down)
