Friday 31 August and Tuesday 4 September(8 JP) Wednesday 5 September (8 DK) An introduction to Forces • SLO: State what a force is and list examples of contact and noncontact forces. • What is the definition of a force? Demonstration and notes. • Types of forces – powerpoint with notes and examples. • What are forces? • An introduction to the 48 point grid – begin activity for SLO 1. • Get activities checked off from your SLO list.

Friday 7 (8 JP) Monday 17 (8 DK) September Floating, Sinking and Density SLO:

Friday 7 (8 JP) Monday 17 (8 DK) September Floating, Sinking and Density SLO: Identify the forces acting on a floating object. • Describe what ‘upthrust’ means • Link whether something will float to its density • Why do materials float/sink? What forces are acting on them? • Experiment: 7 Kb/1 Floating and sinking - Copy experiment from board - Carry out experiment in groups - Write conclusion and answer questions

Tuesday 11 (8 JP) Wednesday 19 (8 DK) September Balanced and Unbalanced Forces SLO:

Tuesday 11 (8 JP) Wednesday 19 (8 DK) September Balanced and Unbalanced Forces SLO: Describe examples of balance and unbalanced forces. • Connect unbalanced forces with a change in speed or direction • Class Tug of War • Notes on Balanced and Unbalanced Forces – From powerpoint, plus reading pg 133, ES 7. • Do the “Balanced Forces” sheet. • In groups, make a poster with a diagram that shows balanced or unbalanced forces and describes the effect. • “Show and tell” for posters. Everyone should add at least another two examples from presentations to notes.

Tuesday 18 September (8 JP) 48 Point Grid Matrix Finish ‘Forces’ posters. Then…. .

Tuesday 18 September (8 JP) 48 Point Grid Matrix Finish ‘Forces’ posters. Then…. . From what you have learnt so far, work through your 48 point grid and complete one activity each for (2) and (3). Don’t forget to get signed off once you have completed this.

Friday 21 September (8 JP) Monday 15 October (8 DK) Mass and Weight SLO:

Friday 21 September (8 JP) Monday 15 October (8 DK) Mass and Weight SLO: Explain the difference between mass and weight. • Describe how a force meter works • Give the units for mass and weight • Notes • Compare the weight of a person on Earth with that of a person on the moon. Complete table. • Using force meters – weigh several items/known masses.

Friday 28 September (8 JP) Wednesday 17 October (8 DK) SLO: Explain what friction

Friday 28 September (8 JP) Wednesday 17 October (8 DK) SLO: Explain what friction is and give examples of helpful and unhelpful friction. • Describe how to increase friction • Describe how lubricants and/or bearings reduce friction • Examples of friction in everyday life – good and bad. Friction video: Bill Nye Friction • Notes on friction. • Choose a (5) activity from the matrix and work on it.

Tuesday 16 (8 JP) Wednesday 24 October (8 DK) Speed SLO: Describe what speed

Tuesday 16 (8 JP) Wednesday 24 October (8 DK) Speed SLO: Describe what speed is and how it is measured. • Recognise the units for distance, time and speed • Use a graph or equation to describe speed Describe how different factors affect the stopping distance of a car • Link tyre design to grip and traction • Explain how reaction distance affects stopping distance • Notes on speed/Discussion on tyre treads • ES 7 pg 138, read, summarise and answer questions • Speed – reaction times/how to use formula to work out speed • Speed - experiment

Friday 19 (8 P) Monday 29 (8 DK)October Interpreting distance/time graphs SLO: Interpret simple

Friday 19 (8 P) Monday 29 (8 DK)October Interpreting distance/time graphs SLO: Interpret simple distance/time graphs. • The slope on the graph shows the speed • Interpreting graphs • Read p. 139, ES 7 and discuss, answer questions • Do 7 Ke/2 – The highway code • Mix and match worksheet
