Force and Motion Newtons Laws Vocabulary 5 3

Force and Motion – Newton’s Laws Vocabulary 5. 3 You will need 10 Index Cards/Week 3

CCGPS S 8 P 5 b. Construct an explanation using Newton’s Laws of Motion to describe the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. c. Construct an argument from evidence to support the claim that the amount of force needed to accelerate an object is proportional to its mass (inertia).

Newton’s First Law of Motion States that an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force. An object at rest will stay at rest, an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by a force. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=LEHR 8 YQNm_Q

Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion Acceleration depends on the object’s mass and on the net force acting on the object. https: //www. youtube. com/watc h? v=Zv. Prn 3 a. BQG 8

Newton’s Third Law of Motion States that if one object exerts force on another object, then the second object exerts a force of equal strength in the opposite direction on the first object. For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Egqc. Gr. B 3 re 8

Action Force The force acting in one direction.

Reaction Force The force acting in the opposite direction.

Normal Force The normal force is the support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object. For example, if a book is resting upon a surface, then the surface is exerting an upward force upon the book in order to support the weight of the book.

Mass (F=MA) A measure of how much matter is in an object. The basic unit of measurement for mass is the kilogram. F=MA – Force equals Mass x Acceleration

Momentum The product of an object’s mass and velocity. Momentum = Mass x Velocity https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=y 2 Gb 4 NIv 0 Xg

Law of Conservation of Momentum The rule that in the absence of outside forces, the total momentum of objects that interact does not change. The amount of momentum is the same before and after interaction.

T. O. T. D. If an object’s momentum depends on velocity and mass, explain the following: If both dogs have the same velocity, which one has the greater momentum? Explain. Dog 1 Dog 2

TOTD Part 2 According to Newton’s Third Law, how are action and reaction forces related?

TOTD Part 3 Explain what would happen, using Newton’s Law, if you tried to catch a ball while wearing roller skates.
