If my child has been attending school and I wish to home educate my child, what must I do? Inform the school in writing and ask for your child to be deregistered from the school roll. The school should then inform the Elective Home Education Team. If your child has a statement or EHC plan you must seek permission from Newham Local Authority. If I remove my child’s name from the school roll, will the school retain any responsibility for my child’s education? As a home educator, you take sole and complete responsibility for your child’s education. Local Authorities have a responsibility to ensure every child of statutory school age, within their authority, is receiving an education My child attends a tuition/education centre during the day, is this still home education? Yes and Newham LA would monitor your child’s education. Is home education the same as home tuition? No. Newham provides home tuition/outreach support if a child is sick and cannot attend school. If your child is home educated the local authority does not provide tutors What are my responsibilities as a home-educating parent? To organise an efficient full-time education suitable to your child’s age, ability and aptitude, and any special needs s/he may have.
