If my child has been attending school and I wish to home educate my child, what must I do? Inform the school in writing and ask for your child to be deregistered from the school roll. The school should then inform the Elective Home Education Team. If your child has a statement or EHC plan you must seek permission from Newham Local Authority. If I remove my child’s name from the school roll, will the school retain any responsibility for my child’s education? As a home educator, you take sole and complete responsibility for your child’s education. Local Authorities have a responsibility to ensure every child of statutory school age, within their authority, is receiving an education My child attends a tuition/education centre during the day, is this still home education? Yes and Newham LA would monitor your child’s education. Is home education the same as home tuition? No. Newham provides home tuition/outreach support if a child is sick and cannot attend school. If your child is home educated the local authority does not provide tutors What are my responsibilities as a home-educating parent? To organise an efficient full-time education suitable to your child’s age, ability and aptitude, and any special needs s/he may have. And to provide an education that "primarily equips a child for life within the community of which he/she is a member Does my child need to be taught by a qualified teacher? No Home educators do not have to have teaching qualifications, nor employ qualified teachers. Is there any particular educational approach that I should follow? Parents can choose what they feel to be the most suitable educational approach for their child/ren What happens once my child is known to Newham’s Elective Home Education Team? Arrangements will be made to meet with you and your child/ren for an informal chat about your plans for their education. Further meetings will be arranged to monitor their education usually at six months then annually Is financial support available? No. The local authority does not provide any financial support What happens if I wish my child to take public examinations? You will have to find an exam centre willing to take your child as an external candidate. You will have to pay exam fees and centre fees. You will need to consider coursework, marking and moderation when choosing a suitable course. Does my child have access to school health services? No. You need to inform your GP and Newham Primary Care Trust that you are home educating, so that your child can continue to get health checks and immunisation What happens if I wish to enrol/re-enrol my child in school? You should apply via the Newham Council Website www. newham. gov. uk or telephone the council’s call centre 020 8430 2000. All completed application forms must be posted to Pupil Services, PO Box 69972, London, E 16 9 DG. They will treat this as a new application for a school place. Updated October 2017
