ANALYZING A FOOD WEB o) Which organisms are both secondary and quaternary consumers? foxes, hawks & owls, snakes, insectivorous birds
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB o) Which organisms are both secondary and quaternary consumers? foxes, hawks & owls, snakes, insectivorous birds p) Which organisms are both tertiary and quaternary consumers? snakes, insectivorous birds
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB Since organisms are interconnected in an ecosystem, if one type of organism goes extinct, then this has effects on the other organisms in the food web.
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB q) If the plants were to go extinct, explain the effect this would have on the primary consumers and the consumers above them. If the plants go extinct, this would deprive the primary consumers of food and they will decrease in numbers. This causes the secondary consumers to also decline because their food source is decreasing. This pattern moves up the entire food chain.
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB r) If the rabbits were to go extinct, explain the effect this would have on the foxes and squirrels. If the rabbits go extinct, the foxes lose a food source, and they will consume more of their other food sources. Since the squirrels are one of the foxes’ other food sources, the squirrels will get eaten more and their numbers will decrease.
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB s) If the hawks and owls were to go extinct, explain the effect this would have on the foxes, squirrels and plants. If the hawks and owls go extinct, the foxes will have less competition for prey and their numbers will increase. The consumers no longer preyed upon by the hawks and owls, like the squirrels, will increase in numbers and overpopulate. This will cause the primary consumers among them to eat too many of the plants which will cause them to decline. The loss of the producers signal trouble for the entire food web.
ANALYZING A FOOD WEB t) If the insectivorous birds were to go extinct, explain the effect this would have on the spiders and the toads. If the insectivorous birds go extinct, this causes the spiders to overpopulate because these birds are the spiders’ only predators. More spiders will then prey on the predaceous insects which will decrease their numbers. Since the toads’ only food source are the predaceous insects, the toads’ numbers will also decline.
