Objectives At the end of the lesson the students will be able to: 1. Explain the term ‘food pyramid’. 2. Categorize food items into the different food groups. 3. Create a sample of a healthy dinner plate. 4. Analyze food items and determine if it is a healthy or unhealthy food.
Food Pyramid A food pyramid is a guide that tells us what things we should eat each day to stay healthy.
There are 6 Groups in the Food Pyramid Protein Dairy Fruit Vegetables Grains
Food Groups Protein builds and maintains the tissues in our body. Foods belonging to this group include; beef, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds. We should have 2 servings of protein each day. Dairy are filled with calcium that helps to build strong teeth and bone. Foods belonging to this group include; milk, cheese, yogurt, and other milk products. We should have 2 servings of diary foods each day. Fruits are filled with vitamins and minerals that helps us to stay healthy. Foods belonging to this group include; apples, gunieps, bananas and many others. We should have 2 servings of fruit each day. Vegetables have many vitamins and nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Foods belonging to this group include; tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, onions and more. We should have 3 servings of vegetables each day. Grains have more fiber and helps you feel full. It helps with the digestion of foods. Foods that belong to this group includes; bread, cereal, rice, tortilla and pasta. We should have 6 to 8 servings of grain each day.
