Fluids Fluids are materials that have no fixed shape and are free to flow. When you think of fluids, you probably think of water. That’s because water is a fluid you see many times each day. Not all fluids are liquids. Gases also flow, so they are fluids too. Air and water are both fluids. These fluids are important to all life on Earth. We pollute the air when we release dangerous gases into the air from cars, factories and landfill sites. Fluids help to make our lives easier. Vacuums use air that carries dirt and dust with it.

Try This Think about the fluids in your life and the devices that use them. Work with a group of three. Each group should have 20 pieces of paper. Write down any fluid you can think of or any instrument or machine that uses a fluid. Use only one piece of paper for each item. 1. How do you decide what things are fluids and what aren’t? Once you have all 20 pieces written on, separate the words into categories. 2. What categories are you using? Glue the words in their categories onto a poster-sized piece of paper. use markers to give each category a heading and to draw arrows between words that are connected. You are making a word map. Draw illustrations where appropriate.

Fluids For Life Several of your body’s systems move or use fluids. The circulatory system The respiratory system The urinary system The circulatory system moves blood around the body. Blood is an important fluid. One of its jobs is to move waste out of cells. Kidneys filter the waste out of the blood and put it into urine. Some people’s kidneys do not filter waste properly and have to use a dialysis machine to clean the blood. Blood travels throughout the human body via arte ries (red) and veins (blue).
