Fluids and Motion Atmospheric Pressure and Water Pressure
Objectives -Analyze how atmospheric pressure varies with depth -Explain how depth and density affect water pressure
Did you know? ? ? • The deepest point in the ocean in the Mariana Trench. ▫ It is 7. 1 miles deep and the Water Pressure is 8 TONS per square inch (pressure on sea level us is 2 lbs per square inch)
Atmospheric Pressure • The atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround the earth ▫ Gravity holds the gases into place of the earth ▫ The pressure caused by the weight of the gravity is called Atmospheric pressure
Atmospheric Pressure • The atmosphere stretches about 150 km above the surface of the earth ▫ However, 80% of the earth’s atmosphere is found below 101 km of the surface
Atmospheric Pressure and Depth • Atmospheric pressure changes as you drop further down towards the earth ▫ As you get closer to the earth fluids (gas and water) get heavier due to gravitational pull
Atmospheric Pressure and People ▫ Atmospheric Pressure affects all things on the earth At sea level, there is an Atmospheric pressure of about 101, 300 N or 2 lbs per square centimeter on your body • The pressure doesn’t crush you because of fluids in your body fighting the pressure
Atmospheric Pressure and People • When you travel to places where the atmospheric pressure is different, your body must find a way to keep its pressure balanced ▫ When this happens your ears will pop ▫ Your ears pop because pressure changes in pockets of air behind your ears
Atmospheric Pressure and People
Water Pressure • Water is a fluid, so it exerts pressure just like gas does • As you go deeper and deeper into the ocean the pressure gets greater ▫ Water pressure is the same whether you are 3 m below a pond or 3 m below an ocean
Water Pressure
Atmospheric Pressure vs Water Pressure • Water is much more dense than air, because of this water pressure is much heavier. ▫ Example – if you climb a 15 foot tree you will barely notice the pressure change, however, if you swim 15 feet under water your ears will pop
