Fluid Power Review What is a fluid power system? n What is the definition of a fluid? n
How does a fluid power system work?
Fluid power systems work by force being applied to a fluid (gas or liquid) , then the energy of the fluid, under pressure, transfers its energy to a mechanically device to perform work.
Pressure n The amount of force distributed over a unit of area, usually expressed in pounds per square inch. Pressure = Force (F) Area (A)
Boyle’s Law n The volume of gas varies as the pressure increases, whereas a liquid’s volume remains the same under pressure, provided the temperature remains constant.
Boyle’s Law 2 F Liquid
Pascal’s Principle n A pressure applied to a confined fluid at rest is transmitted with equal intensity throughout the fluid.
Pascal’s Principle Force All have equal pressure
By understanding Boyle’s Law and Pascal’s Principle, we can now understand how fluid power systems are used to create a mechanical advantage.
Mechanical Advantage n The increase in force gained by using a machine.
Mechanical Advantage using Fluid Power 10 : 1 advantage
