Obj - I can identify the parts of a perfect flower by labeling a diagram. • Flowers have both male and female reproductive structures. • Perfect flowers have both male and female reproductive structures. • Imperfect flowers have either male reproductive structures or female reproductive structures only.
Female Reproductive Structures • Pistil - the whole structure, also called the carpel • Stigma - the top of the structure that receives the pollen • Style - tube between the stigma and ovary that carries the pollen to the ovary • Ovary - the pear shaped bottom of the structure that houses the ovules • Ovules - reproductive cells, eggs; they will become a seed when they are pollenated
Male Reproductive Structures • Stamen - the whole structure • Anther - top of the structure, where pollen is produced • Filament - thin part that holds up the anther • Pollen - the male reproductive cell, fertilized the ovules in female reproductive structure
Other parts of the flower • Stalk (stem) – gives support to the flower • Sepal - small leaf-like structure at the bottom of the flower, what encloses the flower before it blooms • Petals - the colorful structure that attracts pollinating insects • Nectary – where the sugary solution called nectar is that attracts insects • Pollination happens when pollen leaves the anther, enters the pistil through the stigma, goes down the style, into the ovary, and connects with an ovule. This then becomes a seed. This process is called fertilization.
