Florence Nightingale and the how hospitals have changed YEAR 2 TOPIC LEARNING
Hospitals before Nightingale Florence Nightingale was a nurse during the Crimean War. Many hospitals had very poor conditions and they weren’t a very nice place to stay. What do you notice about this drawing of a Crimean War hospital?
Scutari Hospital During the Crimean Warm, the Scutari Barracks was converted into a British military hospital, known as Scutari Hospital. The inadequate building was not designed to cope with the thousands of sick and injured soldiers who were placed there for medical care. When Nightingale arrived with her group of nurses in 1854, she was horrified by the filthy conditions and the suffering which she encountered. Her work at Scutari Hospital not only made her famous but gave her a burning desire to improve hospitals and healthcare provision to try and prevent such avoidable suffering from happening again. Look at the picture of the Scutari Hospital on the next slide. This was drawn after Florence had improved the conditions. How does it differ to the other hospital?
Hospitals today Because of Florence Nightingale, hospitals continued to improve, even after she died. Hospitals today are required to be incredibly clean and safe areas to help sick people. What do you notice about this new hospital ward opened a few years ago. How does it differ to the other pictures?
Today’s task For each picture, you need to write at least 2 sentences describing the conditions. You could talk about how they improved picture to picture. Then draw three pictures – one representing a hospital before Florence Nightingale, one representing the Scutari Hospital, and one representing hospitals today.
