Floorball Lesson Plan Hand Stick Body Ball For
Floorball Lesson Plan “Hand, Stick, Body & Ball” For beginning coaches and starting players By Coach Spike and Stijn (player model) Start Go To Info & Requirements Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3
Back ground Floorball is the largest sport at ISL Students can participate as players, but also as coaches It’s vital to be able to teach young, beginning players the fundamentals of the wonderful game Hence Coaches need to be vigilant and focused on these fundamentals!! BACK NEX T
This Lesson Plan Will deal with some important fundamentals that need to be focused on Unit 1 stick selection and hand positions; Unit 2 Active Body Positioning Unit 3 Ball position There will be 11 interactive Q&A’s This Lesson Plan feeds into the Shooting and Passing Lesson Plan which is the subsequent Floorball Lesson Plan. BACK NEX T
Requirements Adequate number of right handed and left handed sticks (on average 70% of players should normally play left handed) At least two balls per player Large white board, markers (three colors) and eraser Paper and pencil for all players Basic knowledge of the rules of Floorball BACK NEX T
Start… Having all the materials we can now start our 3 units on the Floorball Fundamentals. Please use Paper and Pencil to write down: Comments while answering the questions Questions you might have during this presentation show Input we can use to improve this presentation. Good luck and Have Fun!!!! BACK NEX T
Unit 1. Stick selection & Hand positioning Crucial is for each player to have the correct stick The proper length of the stick is determined by putting the stick in front of the player’s body. With the blade on the ground the top of the grip should be in between the belly button and the sternum. BACK NEX T
Unit 1. Stick selection & Hand Positioning Next is finding out whether the player is a right (cnt’d) Next is finding out whether the player is a right handed or a left handed shooter. Normally the strongest hand/arm should be on the top of the grip so when playing one-handedly the player will have the best possible control. I. e. a right handed writer or tennis player will need to put the right hand on top and the left one half way down the shaft. This is a typical LEFT handed shooter. A RIGHT handed shooter has the left hand on top and the right hand half way down the shaft. As a result about 70 -80% of all players will play as a LEFT handed shooter. (Even though they’ll be right handed writers or tennis players!!) BACK NEX T
Q 1. Stick selection The blade should be curved with the end pointing in the forehand shot direction. Is this a stick for a right handed player/shooter? YES NO BACK
CORRECT!!! Look from above the stick down on the shaft and blade. When the blade curves to the left, the stick is for a RIGHT handed shooter. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! Please look from above the stick down on the shaft and blade. When the blade curves to the left, the stick is for a RIGHT handed shooter. BACK NEX T
Q 2. Stick selection Would this be a stick for a left handed shooter? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Look from above the stick down on the shaft and blade facing away from you. When the blade curves to the right, the stick is for a LEFT handed shooter. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! Please look from above the stick down on the shaft and blade. When the blade curves to the right, the stick is for a LEFT handed shooter. BACK NEX T
Q 3. Stick & Hands Here we have a left hand shooting player. Is everything regarding the stick and hand position correct? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! You’ve noticed a problem. The hands are well positioned, but on a right handed stick instead of one for a leftie!! BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! You thought all was OK, which is true for the hand position. Please give this player a stick for left handed shooters as he’s currently using one for right handed shooters… BACK NEX T
Q 4. Stick and Hands Here the same question for this right handed player. The player says it doesn’t feel right! Do you agree with him? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! You’ve correctly noticed there’s an issue Not with the hands, however…. This right hand shooting player is using a LEFTIE stick!!! Always look to correct this simple issue by handing out the proper stick. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! There’s an issue. . Not with the hands, however…. This right hand shooting player is using a LEFTIE stick!!! Look at the direction of the curve in the blade… Always look to correct this simple issue by handing out the proper stick. BACK NEX T
Q 5. Stick and Hands Do you think this is the correct stick choice and hand positioning? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!!! You saw an issue: His stick choice was correct for the right handed shooter he is. Also the left hand was properly higher on the stick, however… Both hands were too close together and way down the shaft. Here you see him with the correct hand positioning. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!!! There’s still an issue: His stick choice was correct for the right handed shooter he is. Also the left hand was properly higher on the stick, however… Both hands were too close together and way down the shaft. Here you see him with the correct hand positioning. BACK NEX T
Unit 2. Body Positioning As in any sport coaches need to watch out for proper body positioning in Floorball. To have the best possible result of the sporting effort. Most importantly: to focus on the health of the player and prevent injuries!! We are looking for: “Active Body Positioning” (ABP). BACK NEX T
Q 6. Body Positioning This player is really working on his Active Body Position. However, his friend says he hasn’t achieved it yet. Do you agree with the friend? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Indeed there’s an issue here: The legs are too straight/stiff. They should always be slightly bended. To absorb the shocks be as agile as possible. allow better field of view from the eyes to look around BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! There’s a real issue here: The legs are too straight/stiff. They should always be slightly bended. To absorb the shocks be as agile as possible allow better field of view from the eyes to look around BACK NEX T
Q 7. Body Positioning Here we have a much better positioning with nicely bended knees. Do you feel this would be proper Active Body Positioning? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Even though we have a much better positioning with nicely bended knees, there still is an issue. The back is too straight, making the player too rigid/stiff in his movements. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! Even though there’s a much better positioning with nicely bended knees, there still is an issue. The back is too straight, making the player too rigid/stiff in his movements. BACK NEX T
Q 8. Body Positioning Would this qualify as ABP (Active Body Positioning)? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Still no real ABP. The back is fine, but: the feet should be shoulder width apart and the knees should be slightly bended as well. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! Still no real ABP. The back is fine, but: the feet should be shoulder width apart and the knees should be slightly bended as well. BACK NEX T
Q 9. Body Positioning What about this position? Would you qualify it as ABP? (Active Body Positioning) YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Compare it with the previous positions and you’ll see the differences! He’s ready to look around, accelerate, turn, shoot… anything! Very nice ABP!! BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! Compare it with the previous positions and you’ll see the differences! He’s ready to look around, accelerate, turn, shoot… anything! Very nice ABP!! BACK NEX T
Unit 3. Ball Position We’ve looked at the stick selection, hand position of the hands on the stick and the Active Body Positioning. Now let’s see how the position of the ball vs the body will influence everything. Please look at the following questions and answer whether or not the ball is positioned correctly versus the body. BACK NEX T
Q 10. Ball Position Is the ball in a position for the player to have good control over it? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! You’ve spotted that the player can’t control the ball properly as it is too close, pushing the stick into the body and prevents Active Body Positioning!! The ball should be further away from the player!! BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! The player can’t control the ball properly as it is too close, pushing the stick into the body and prevents Active Body Positioning!! The ball should be further away from the player!! BACK NEX T
Q 11. Ball Position Here the ball is further away as requested. Is this giving the player proper control? YES Prev. Q NO
CORRECT!!! Clearly this is not helping from an ABP or ball control point of view. The ball is too far away and the player can’t play properly. BACK NEX T
Sorry, INCORRECT!!! The ball is in a position which is not helping from an ABP or ball control point of view. The ball is too far away and the player can’t play properly. BACK NEX T
Conclusion Here you have all three units in one picture A right handed shooter with the correct Stick Hand positions Active Body Positioning Ball vs Body distance BACK NEX T
Conclusion (2) These seemingly unimportant issues have proven to be crucial fundamentals that each Coach needs to focus for the players to have a fun, sporty experience with low injury risk. Feel free to use it with your players, beginners or not, as everyone needs to be reminded from time to time. Questions? Please come and see me: Coach Spike BACK NEX T
