Floor Plans and Floor Plan Symbols
What is a floor plan? l l l A 2 -dimensional diagram showing the layout of a house. Drawn to scale (each ¼” represents 1 foot) Has less detail than blueprints Drawn for each level of a structure Also used to show color plans and furniture arranging.
What does a Floor Plan Show? l Shows: – – – – Exterior and interior walls Size and location of windows and doors Built-in cabinets and appliances Permanent fixtures Stairs and fireplaces Porches, patios, and decks Room names and approximate sizes
Two Basic Floor Plan Types l Closed Floor Plan l Open Floor Plan
Closed Floor Plan l. Separate rooms enclosed by walls with an entry door – Benefits: noise reduction, privacy – Drawbacks: costly, breaks up space to make it appear smaller
Open Floor Plans l. Few separating walls (bathroom the exception) – Benefits—saves cost of building material, home tends to appear more spacious – Drawbacks—no privacy, noise levels
Drafting floor plans: Where to start? l l Decide on the dimensions of your room. Draw dimensions with PENCIL first. Walls need to be ½’ thick (½ of a graph square) – l l TIP: Do not shade in the walls with pencil. Only shade in walls with sharpie. Add built in features and furnishings. When everything is perfect, go over the design in sharpie. Fill in walls. – TIP: Use a ruler for ALL straight lines, even when using the sharpie for best presentation results.
Then what? l l l Label the room with BLOCK lettering, one letter per square. Label the approximate room size, one number per square. Color if appropriate.
