History ● Crutches date as far back as the prehistoric age. ● Emily Schlink patented the walking stick in 1917. ● A. R. Lofstrand Jr. made it height adjustable. ● Thomas Fetterman designed a safer crutch - the one we use to this day.
Cons of Regular Crutches ● ● ● ● Restrict movement User prone to tripping Cannot walk for long periods of time Prohibit use of arms Weight restrictions Easy to improperly use and adjust Hurt armpits and wrists ○ Sores ○ Crutch paralysis ○ All pressure put on armpits
Ideas of Improvement ● Our idea is based off the design of a knee brace. ● Poles will extend 1 -2 inches past your foot from the brace. ● The foot will essentially be floating, bearing no weight.

Medical Aspects ● Injuries that require crutches are generally sorted into two categories ○ ○ Partially weight bearing Non weight bearing ● Even small amounts of weight can hurt recovery time ● Crutch will target ankle and foot injuries ○ 5 million ankle injuries in US alone last year
Design Proposal ● Composed of an Aluminum Alloy ● Weight will be transferred up from a solid boot to a brace placed around the thigh ● The injured foot will be suspended slightly above the base of the boot ● Thin rubber placed on the bottom of the boot for grip and stability
Our Plan of Action ● ● ● Finalize design Find best materials to use Estimate the cost Create a prototype Compare walking with and without armless crutch ● Idea conclusion
