About Topic • Properties of discrete time systems are very much important to simplify the system response with easiest way. • Linear convolution tells us what will be the system response if one input & the systems response is given. • Students can easily analyze the system’s performance by using two basic properties & concept of linear convolution. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 5

About In-Class Segment § In-Class segment contain activities like • § § Students are required to think first on the given topic, discuss with peers, write, reflect and express their thinking. Engage students in higher-order thinking (Analyze-Evaluate-Create). Students comprehensive level is increased. Students are analyzing problem on designing for class. Think – Pair - Share IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 10
In-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of In - Class Activity § § Analyze the discrete signal & system using linearity & time invariance properties. Analyze system by finding the linear convolution of two sequences Key Concept(s) to be covered § § Use of properties in solving the numerical. Solve linear convolution of two sequences. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 11
In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Think – Pair - Share Explain the strategy by giving details of 1. Teacher will pose questions on the respective topic 2. Student will think, discuss with peers, write, reflect and express their thinking. Justify why the above is an active learning strategy § § This activity engages students in higher-order thinking (Analyze-Evaluate-Create). Students are analyzing problem. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 12
In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Real world problem solving using. § Think-Pair-Share Concept clarification using. § Peer Instruction IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 13
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Teacher pose the two PI questions at the start of the class and provide summary of two basic properties and linear convolution. Q 1: Whether the output of both systems shown in following figure are same? Justify your answer. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 14
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Q 2: What will be the response of following system, if input to the system is x(n) = {1, 2, 3, 4} & system response h(n) = {1, 1, 0, 0} IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 15
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Student Does § § § For each question they will first vote individually. Then they will discuss with peers and come to consensus. Listen to instructors explanation. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 16
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Instructor will asked the students to: 1. Summarize or recall first, linearity & time invariance property & linear convolution. (Formulae, statement etc. . ) 2. Look at the both diagrams given in Q. 1 & Q. 2 3. Think on the property, where we can use any of the learned property. 4. Individually vote for the answer. 5. Make pair with neighbor. 6. Discuss with peer & come to the conclusion. 7. At the end, describe the answers. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 17
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Think (~ 5 minutes) Instruction: 1. Think individually on the two given properties & assume a 1 = a 2 = 10, x 1(n)= {1, 2, 3, 4} X 2(n)={1, 2, 2, 0} 2. Look at the given figures. 3. Apply the inputs. 4. Select the appropriate property & convolution formula. 5. Find the answers for both the figures of Q. 1 & Q. 2. 6. Keep your answer in your mind or write on your notebook. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 18
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Pair (~5 minutes) Instruction: 1. Now pair up and compare your answers. 2. Agree on one final answer. 3. While students are pairing and discussing, instructor goes to 2~3 sections to see what they are doing. 4. Now after pairing, instructor will try to find out whether all students have selected the same property & formula. 5. If require, I will give hints to remember the video seen in out of class activity. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 19
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Share (~10 minutes) 1. Instructor asks a group to share their answer with class. 2. Check whethere are different answers. 3. After sharing is done, instructor gives feedback on the correct solution and how to use linearity property for first question. 4. Instructor will also explain major role of linear convolution in 2 nd question. In the next iteration of TPS, • In the Think Phase, the students should ask himself, can we use next property in solving the Q. 1 • In the pair phase we ask students to compare the answers. • In the share phase again the different answers are sought & come to the final answer. 20 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy • In both the above strategies, students are required to go beyond mere listening and execution of prescribed steps. • They are required to think deeply about the content they were familiarized in out-of-class and do higher order thinking. • Students are continuously busy in doing things/task. • In this they could also understand the target audience and also various individual analysis. So above TPS and PI activities are Active Learning Strategy. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay 21
