Flinn Scientific’s Lab Safety Contract
**All lab safety rules are important** Be sure to read and understand the entire safety contract. We will highlight some of the most important rules in class.
PURPOSE: What’s the Point? l Skim the PURPOSE. l In your own words, describe the purpose of the Safety Contract.
GENERAL GUIDELINES l 1. Be responsible. l 2. Follow directions and ask questions. l 5. No food, drink, or gum. l 7. Read and follow procedures.
GENERAL GUIDELINES l 12. Be cautious. Notify Mr. Shoup of any problems. l 15. Keep hands away from eyes, mouth, and body during lab. Always wash hands when you are done. l 16. Never leave lab station alone. l 18. Fire drill safety.
CLOTHING l 21. Goggles will be worn during labs with chemicals, heat, or glassware. No exceptions! l 23. Long hair tied back. No dangling jewelry. No loose or baggy clothing. No sandals – closedtoe shoes.
ACCIDENTS and INJURIES l 25. Report any accident…spills, breaks, cuts, or burns. l 26. Immediately notify Mr. Shoup with serious injuries or accidents. l 27. Use eye wash station if any chemicals splash into your eye.
HANDLING CHEMICALS l 29. Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemicals unless instructed to do so. l 31. Do not return unused chemicals to their original containers. l 34. Handle acids with extreme care. l 37. If transferring chemicals/acids in the lab, hold them securely and walk carefully.
HANDLING GLASSWARE and EQUIPMENT 39. Never handle broken glassware with bare hands. Notify Mr. Shoup l 42. When unplugging cord from electrical socket, grasp the plug not the cord. l 43. Never use chipped or cracked glass. l 45. If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask.
HEATING SUBSTANCES l 47. Never reach over a lit burner or flame. l 48. Do not leave lit burners or heated substances unattended. l 50. Remember that heated metal and glass stay hot for a long time
