Manufacturing Overhead Variances l l The flexible budget variance for manufacturing overhead shows whether managers are keeping total overhead costs within the budgeted amount for the actual production of the period (actual – flexible). The production volume variance (this is a new concept and not part of the total flexible budget variance ) arises when actual production differs from the level in the static budget (allocated – flexible).
