FLAME LAB Wear appropriate lab clothing: Closed toed shoes No torso showing Hair tied back

FLAME LAB PRE-LAB: COPY DOWN THIS PAGE IN PREPARATION Purpose: To experiment with flame tests on different salts and to predict the identity of an unknown metal ion from a flame test. Materials: Salt solutions, Goggles, Bunsen burner, Matches, Q Tip, 10 test tubes/test tube rack Procedures: 1. Clean 10 test tubes for your table and place them in a test tube rack 2. Place 1 m. L of each solution into each of the test tubes CAUTION: Before you use the burner in the next procedures, check to see that long hair and loose clothing have been confined. 3. Dip the tip of the clean QTip into one of the solutions, and then hold it just above the inner flame of the Bunsen burner. 4. Observe the color of the flame just above the QTip. Heat only the tip of the QTip (burning the wooden piece may cause you to misinterpret your flame color!). 5. Record the color of the flame in the Data Table on the next page. 6. Test each of the remaining solutions and record the observed color in your data table. Use a new QTip each trial to make sure you do not to contaminate your samples. Observations:

POST-LAB QUESTIONS 1. Create a Claim- Evidence-Reasoning statement for the unknowns chemicals that you tested. 2. Explain how colors in the flame test are produced. 3. Explain why we did not see distinct lines (like the emission spectrum analysis lab) when the metal salts were burned? 4. Colorful light emissions are applicable to everyday life. Where else have you observed colorful light emissions? 5. Aerial fireworks contain gunpowder that produce colors. What elements would you include to produce the following colors? • Red • Orange • Green
