Five Types of Transportation in the 1800’s Emily Wilkowski
Steam Boats • Steam poweredsteam engines • Reduced travel time • Could move extremely large numbers of passengers and cargo
Railroads • Commercial by 1830’s • Thousands of miles of track laid across the country • Best long distance travel • Could transport drastically higher numbers of passengers and cargo • Dirty
Wagons • More convenient than walking and could carry a large load • Inclement weather could cause lots of problems • The top was typically canvas held up by an arching wooden frame and water-proofed with an oil treatment • Used by many families heading out west to settle territory • Wagon trains- travelling together, safety, and support in groups
Stage Coaches • Used for both travelers and cargo delivery • Travel could get rough and drivers were at times unreliable • Usually four horses pulling the stage • Like busses, they had certain routes and regular stops
Bicycles • Originally European • First bicycles only moved in a straight line • Many people improved or modified the model • Grew hugely popular in the later 1800’s • Eventually tandem bikes, tricycles, quadracycles • Quick travel over short distances, much more efficient than walking • Women had trouble being able to ride them because of their skirts
