Review of COVID-19 data Specifically in the I/DD population in Indiana • As of Sunday, June 7, of people “in services” • there have been 202 have tested positive, and there have been 11 deaths • this includes 66 people living in group homes and 136 receiving waiver services • 173 staff have tested positive statewide, and 4 have died • Some data nationally suggests people is I/DD are 5 x more likely to contract COVID-19 and 5 x more likely to die from COVID-19 than the general population • Considerations: preexisting medical conditions, home setting, frequency of staff in and out of home, difficulty with PPE/social distancing compliance
Quote by Governor Holcomb: “Just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD”
Discussion of Re-Entry Protocols Healthy expectations & outcomes • If you or a loved one is “in services” ask to see your agencies COVID-19 plan • Please be patient, as organizations are trying to mitigate risk given the increased incidence of infection amongst our clients and staff • Most agencies are requiring staff to wear face covering while working in homes and encouraging clients to do the same while in the community • Many Behavioral Consultants, Music Therapists, Rec. Therapists, and ABA providers are continuing to encourage telehealth visits when appropriate • Some agencies are asking clients/guardians to sign a release/consent to provide face to face services
Discussion of Re-Entry Protocols Healthy expectations & outcomes • Day Programs are beginning to reopen in phases – again with expectation of PPE and social distancing, some are offering a hybrid of “in person” services and “virtual” for those not ready for re-entry • There are LOTS of resources, including guidance in different languages, visual communications for individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and visual aids to use at home and in the community at: https: //www. in. gov/fssa/ddrs/5762. htm
Research supports that effectively addressing COVID-19 spread requires all four components working together.
