First Semester Journey UCOL Final Presentation

Scavenger Hunt Thought I knew the campus pretty well but the scavenger hunt showed me there was a lot more to know. Main thing I learned from this activity was all of the resources available at J. Murray Atkins Library.

Strong Interest Inventory IRC – Investigative, Realistic, Conventional. Suggests careers in medical science, research or healthcare. Reaffirmed on track for interests.

What can I do with a Major in? Biology is the study of life, from the simplest forms of plants and animals to the highly complex structure of the human being. It includes the study of how organisms are structured as well as how they function and relate to each other. Taken from College Majors and Careers by Paul Phifer.

Pre-Health Fields Discussed scheduling advising appointments, GPA Requirements. Determined medical school might not be in my future.

Library and Academic Success Learned access resources in the library. Tips on how to succeed in college. Put work in outside of class. Go to class be engaged. Seek help immediately when needed. Don’t assume it is the same as high school.

Goal Setting Make sure goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. My goals were do to my personal best in all my classes. End up with a good GPA. Determine if I want to continue toward current major.

Career Research Paper Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist Investigation of this career to determine Interest. Determined it met my strong assessment – IRC. I plan to seriously consider this career path.

Time Management Organize your life. Make a plan. Plan Monthly and weekly. Prioritize Daily. Develop and routine that includes time for study and relaxing.

Information Interview Dr. Dixie-Ann Sawin. Bachelor’s of Science in Zoology and Biochemistry, a Master’s of Science in Biology and Genetics and a Ph. D, in Genetics/Neuroscience/Molecular Biology. Neuroscience is defined as the scientific study of the brain and nervous system.

Education and Research Graduate Work at Duke focusing on gene studies related to Batten’s disease is an inherited disorder of the nervous system which usually presents in early childhood. Next she went to the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) where she wrote articles for the NIEHS newsletter and worked Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease.

Current Career Senior Medical Information Scientist at Fresenius Medical Care North America. Develops educational content for courses in nephrology. Responds to medical and disease related questions from health care providers across the United States. Writes, reviews and edits articles and manuscripts.

Interview Her early education choices led to her current career. Qualities for a science career are the ability and willingness to learn. Paths a scientist can take include academics, research, pharmacy, or practicing medicine.

Majors Fair/Faculty/Alumni Panels Biology not much new information. Chemistry Department very eager to help might consider this major. Alumni Panel offered great information on medical majors and lab work.

Conclusion Pre-Biology for now. Advisor suggested taking general education as you make final decisions on major. Medical Career still the focus. Major may change if science courses lead in a new direction.
