Common Mistakes n Starting late n n Not asking for help prior to submitting

Common Mistakes n Starting late n n Not asking for help prior to submitting the report n n Will review later in the presentation Lack of visual aids n 5 CDR is pretty late in the game to be asking major questions, so please ask for help ASAP if you need help with your rocket. Not using (or breaking) the formatting n n Reports aren’t something you can do in a few hours, the day before. It will take days/weeks to complete all work required to fill out the template Rock. Sim screenshots, photos of components you’re considering, etc. 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

Immediate Steps n n Flush out details in your Moon Challenge payload design Refine your Rock. Sim model n n n Figure out how you’re going to start building your competition rocket once materials are purchased n n 9 Design should be mature by CDR Motor selection is due at CDR March 1 st FNL recommends delaying purchases until the CDR stage Determine local launch plans for competition flight 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

When Starting the Report… n n The CDR is due March 1 st Report expectations include: n n n 10 Vehicle Criteria - refine, more details (narrowed down to single choice) Safety - refine, more details Payload Criteria - refine, more details (narrowed down to single choice) Project Plan - refine, more details (COVID-19 launch plan) Communicate the engineering and design effort involved Maintain good formatting (see next 2 slides) 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

Report Formatting (1 of 2) n Feel free to change up (personalize) the template

Report Formatting (1 of 2) n Feel free to change up (personalize) the template n n n However, you should not change n n n Order of sections, section titles, footers, headers Table of Contents (except to update) The Template is the minimum information asked for n n 11 You can change backgrounds, header types/formats, title page, text colors You may add subsections (continue heading types) You may add images, figures and tables and associated captions You may add List of Figures and List of Tables You may add as many Appendix as you need (not included in 40 -pg limit) Please add images where deemed relevant (picture worth a thousand words) You may expand analysis, or project plans or safety 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

Report Formatting (2 of 2) n Navigation Pane n n Table of Contents n n n When adding figures (tables) use captions (Reference -> insert caption) References to Sections and Figures/Tables n 12 Use tables as much as possible to list information, instead of paragraphs Can maintain an Excel spreadsheet then copy to Word table Figure/Table Captions n n Insert 2 nd and 3 rd levels, ensure no blank headers Bullets vs. Paragraphs vs. Tables n n Should match navigation pane, remember to update Section Heading Styles and Levels n n Allows quick editing by jumping to sections In the text, make sure to reference your caption/figure (Reference -> cross-ref) 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

Report Writing Best Practice n Use Team Structure to divide up report writing tasks

Report Writing Best Practice n Use Team Structure to divide up report writing tasks n n n It is best to have consistent assigned tasks over the duration of the project Team Lead – handles more team management than technical Safety Officer – handles all safety documentation Simulation Lead – integrates and updates simulations as the project progresses Payload Team – handles the payload/challenge solution n n Structures Team – handles the vehicle design, test and build n n Recovery, Avionics, Airframe Example timeline from now until March 1 st n n n 13 Hardware, Software Week of Feb 15 – Divide up CDR report sections, meet with rocket mentor Week of Feb 22 – Incorporate PDR judges feedback Week of Mar 1 – Edit highlights in to Virtual CDR 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

Virtual Presentation Best Practice n n n Write the CDR Report first, so all

Virtual Presentation Best Practice n n n Write the CDR Report first, so all details are defined Keep it brief - only add key aspects Follow the slide order in the presentation template n n Highlight the visual portions of your report n n n Rock. Sim screenshots Drawings or graphics to convey your design Tables for key values like static margin, thrust-to-weight ratio, etc. Limited to 10 minutes; every team member should present The virtual presentation is an opportunity to get immediate verbal feedback from both judges and the admin team, so ensure you include anything you want feedback on n 14 Makes it harder for judges to give good feedback if you don’t do this Prepare 1 -2 questions ahead of time for the FNL admin team and judges 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar

This is a chance to ask us any questions you may still have. n During Ascent n n n Independent of Motor Ejection n n 15 Near apogee as the rocket’s y-velocity slows to zero is ideal Rocketry mentor can advise of keeping a safe flight while deploying a hatch Hatch/door should be actuated through mechanical and electronic means Opening the door using motor eject doesn’t involve designing a payload 07 January 2022 CDR Development Webinar
