An Outline of a Speech • What is an outline? - a written plan of the speech • What are the 3 main parts of an outline? I. Introduction II. Body III. Conclusion
What comes at the beginning of a speech? Introduction (to your topic) Why is the introduction important? It’s the first thing your audience hears. They will decide now if they think your speech will be interesting or boring. They decide now if they think you are a good or bad speaker.
Goals of the Introduction Tell the audience your topic. Entertain your audience.
Forecasting 展望 the Topic By the time you finish your introduction, your audience should know your topic. Your audience should have a basic idea of what your speech will talk about.
Entertaining the Audience Remember, this is the first thing your audience hears. Give a good first impression.
Let’s look at the 3 important parts of the Introduction 1) Hook 2) Bridge 3) Thesis We will use one speech topic as an example for this lesson: A speech about why I would love to live in Egypt.
The Hook 钩 The hook is the very first part of the introduction. The hook is used to get the audience's attention.
Many Types of Hooks Type 1: Give the audience a fact 实 or statistic 统计.
Example Hook – Fact or Statistic Do you know how long a camel can survive in the desert without drinking water? 3 months!
Sample Introduction Hook: Do you know how long a camel can survive in the desert without drinking water? 3 months! Camels are just one of many exotic 异 animals that live in Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable 和睦的(3).
What is the Hook? The Hook is something about your topic that is interesting and makes the audience listen carefully. Why are facts/statistics interesting? Because they are true! Your hook should catch the audience like a fisherman catches a fish.
Many Types of Hooks Type 1: Fact or Statistic Type 2: Famous Quote 引用句 or Proverb 谚语
Example Quote / Proverb Quote: “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. ” Proverb: “A camel does not tease 取笑 another camel about its humps. ”
Example Introduction with Quote Hook: “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. ” This is one of many wise quotes from one of the world's most ancient cultures. Beginning back in 3100 BC, Egypt had a thriving 兴旺 society. Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable (3).
Example Introduction with Proverb Hook: “A camel does not tease 取笑 another camel about its humps. ” This is one of many wise proverbs from one of the world's most ancient cultures. Beginning back in 3100 BC, Egypt had a thriving society. Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable (3).
Where Can I Find Quotes? Quotes can come from Famous people (politicians, professional atheletes, musicians, celebrities) Books Songs Movies
Many Types of Hooks Type 1: Fact or Statistics Type 2: Famous Quote or Proverb Type 3: Question
Question for the Audience Ask the audience a question. What happens when someone asks you a question? You think. When you think, you are focused, you are interested.
Example Introduction with Question Hook: Have you ever wanted to climb inside of the Great Pyramid? Built thousands of years ago, these pyramids are one of the 7 wonders of the world. Egypt has many amazing things to see which make it an amazing place. Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable (3).
Last Type of Hook Type 1: Fact or Statistics Type 2: Famous Quote or Proverb Type 3: Question Type 4: Personal Story
Personal Story Tell the audience a personal story that happened in your life. It’s also fine to use someone else's story if it’s a great story. For example: “Grandfather's bedtime stories about Egypt. . . ”
The Effect of a Story… Fun to listen to. Easy to remember. Just be careful! Make sure your story is relevant 应用 (related to your topic).
Practice Writing a Hook Here’s a topic: Should Sias students be allowed to live off campus? Choose one of the 4 types of Hooks and write a Hook for this topic. Type 1: Fact or Statistic Type 2: Quote or Proverb Type 3: Question Type 4: Personal Story
Other Parts of the Introduction Thesis 论题 The thesis has your main ideas. For my class, thesis will always come at the end of the introduction. It is one sentence that tells all the main points of the speech. We have already seen thesis in the speech about Egypt.
Example Introduction with Question Hook: Have you ever wanted to climb inside of the Great Pyramid? Built thousands of years ago, these pyramids are one of the 7 wonders of the world. Egypt has many amazing things to see which make it an amazing place. Thesis: Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable (3).
Thesis Statements For many speeches, we use 3 main points. The thesis statement has these 3 main points in one sentence. The thesis statement is the most important part of the Introduction, as it tells the listeners what the speech will be about.
One more piece of the Introduction… The Bridge connects the hook to thesis. Like a real bridge, it helps us move from one place to another smoothly.
Why do we need a Bridge? What if we had no bridge? Hook: Have you ever wanted to climb inside of the Great Pyramid? Thesis: Egypt is a great country to live in because there are many famous places (1), the weather is always warm (2), and the people are very sociable (3). It doesn't sound good. The bridge is a transition. 过渡
