First Grade Homework & Classroom News: Oct. 9 - Oct. 13 th Homework Menu: Choose one appetizer and one main course to do for homework every night. If you are still hungry for practice, help yourself to some dessert! Appetizer (5 minutes) 1. Practice any of the listed Daily Math skills 2. Write an exclamatory sentence ( a sentence said with excitement) about something. 3. Choose a word family word to write in a complete sentence Main Course(15 minutes) 1. Read a “just-right book” to a stuffed animal or a family member for 13 minutes. Spend 2 minutes retelling the story with as many details as possible. Dessert (10 minutes) th Word families Due to the short nature of this week we aren’t introducing any new phonics skills but will be working on diagraphs when we return from fall break • • Sh (ship) Ch (chick) Th (thorn) Wh (whale) 1. Write about something new you learned today in your planner 2. Xtra Math 3. Raz-kids (log-in information can be found in Wednesday’s folder • • Daily Math skills: Say, show, or write different ways to make numbers within 10. write subtraction sentences and solve within 10 in the horizontal and also the vertical format Create your own story problems using subtraction within 20 and have someone in your family solve them! Write a fact family for a set of numbers (3+4=7 4+3=7 7 -3=4 7 -4=3) STEM focus and Words of the week Questions: What is a smart goal? Why is it important to set smart goals and work towards them? Words to know: growth mindset, fixed mindset, neurons, smart goals

Homework and Newsletter Oct. 9 th - Oct. 13 th A note from the teachers… Hello scorpion families! Conferences start tomorrow morning and we are really looking forward to meeting with each of you. If for any reason, you will not be able to make your time, please contact us through dojo or classroom phone. Your kids have been working hard to put together their data folders so that they can track their own learning and see their growth. We are excited to share those folders with you this week. We are continuing to talk about “growth mindset” and hope that you continue supporting them with that at home. Our brains are like muscles and grow stronger when we work hard and feel confident in our abilities. Thank you to all of the families who have already sent items in for our Fall festival baskets. We appreciate all that you do to help our school! Have a safe and enjoyable Fall break and we look forward to the learning we will do together when we return October 23 rd. Adam continues to make good choices on the playground and in the classroom Mrs. Swartz’s class: Mason has been working hard on improving his writing by stretching words out independently Eleanor consistently asks “is this my best work” and strives to improve!
