First Grade Homework & Classroom News: August 27 Homework Menu: Choose one appetizer and one main course to do for homework every night. If you are still hungry for practice, help yourself to some dessert! Appetizer (5 minutes) Practice any of the listed Daily Math skills Write some word family words in a fun way Main Course(15 minutes) Read a “just-right book” to a stuffed animal or a family member for 13 minutes. Spend 2 minutes retelling what you read. Dessert (10 minutes) Write about something that happened today in your planner Go on to the class website and explore some of the ELA and Math games linked on the Web Resources page. • • • th- Aug 31 st Word families Words that end in these patterns: -ap (gap) -an (ran) -ad (mad) -id (hid) -is (his) -ed (red) -eck (neck) -ob (job) -og (log) -up (cup) -um (hum) Daily Math skills: Counting to and from any number within 120 Add zero to different numbers and write number sentences (4 + 0=4 or 0+6=6) Counting handfuls of items (cereal, pennies, paper clips) Add together two groups of items to find sums (4 cheerios plus 3 cheerios gives us 7 cheerios) Practice writing numbers from 1 -120 STEM focus and Words of the week Questions: How can we find different solutions to problems? Challenges: Help Goldlocks solve a problem by designing and building a chair to replace the one from baby bear *continued Words to know: community, small, medium, large, strong, weak, flexible, rigid

Homework and Newsletter August 27 th- Aug 31 st A note from the teachers… We hope everyone had a great weekend! This week we will extending our knowledge of decoding and writing short vowel word families. In math, we are building number sense skills and writing addition number sentences within 10. We have dived into the Engineering Design Process with a fairy tale challenge. We will be using reading, math, writing, and STEM skills to finish up our Goldilocks fairy tale and solve a big problem! We hope to see all of you here tonight at the K-2 parent information night form 6 -7: 30 pm. This is a parent only event so that we can cover lots of information and answer questions. Sign up sheets for Fall conferences will also be available tonight. Don’t forget that Labor Day is on Monday so we have a three day weekend!!
